“We didn’t change who we are. We just started calling it by its right name,” said Mike Archer, who owns the home. “When someone’s looking for a safe place to stay sober, they shouldn’t have to figure out what an organization actually does. We’re a sober living home. The name should say so, and now it does.”
That matters more than it might sound. A lot of people arrive here at a low point, and often it’s a parent or a spouse doing the looking on their behalf. A name that plainly says what the place is makes that first phone call a little less daunting. And the first call is usually the hardest one.
What people find when they get here hasn’t changed since the doors opened in December 2007. Sober living is the step between a treatment program and living on your own again. It’s for people who’ve already gotten sober and are ready for more independence but know they’ll do better with some structure and a few others around who get it. “Everybody who’s lived here already knew what this place was,” Archer said. “This just makes sure the next person can find it too.”
Over the coming months, the home will update its website, its sign, and its materials to carry the ACTS Collinfield Sober Living Home name. Everything that matters — the purpose, the people, the work — stays exactly where it is.
